The Joy of Language

I'm listening to NPR and I hear the expression " charismatic megafauna". "Say what?" sez I, and it's off to Google to find out what the heck that is. My search led me to a nifty site called "The Word Spy."

To wit, Web Spy "is devoted to lexpionage, the sleuthing of new words and phrases. These aren't "stunt words" or "sniglets," but new terms that have appeared multiple times in newspapers, magazines, books, Web sites, and other recorded sources."

's nifty. Check it out.

Library Geeking

This is just completely and utterly cool! Before I fell into computers, I was a library technician, and this is really cool library geekdom. To wit:

The Open WorldCat pilot is an initiative that integrates library records into popular Internet search sites and tests the effectiveness of the Web in guiding users to library-owned materials. The goal of the pilot: to make libraries more visible to Web users and more accessible from the sites where many people begin to look for information.
What Web users experience
A Web user who uses Yahoo! Search, Google or other search sites to locate a particular item may be pointed to a library that owns the item based on records in WorldCat, the world's most comprehensive bibliographic database.

Edit: I'd lost track of where I'd found the link, but I found it again. Check out Library Stuff.

Wiki Rocks!

So, over lunch I dropped into one of my favorite Wiki's, the Firefly Wiki, only to find that the main page had been vandalized. I was, naturally horrified... and it took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to restore it.

Now that rocks. Yes, any goober can vandalize it, but also any samaritan can fix it. I likes that, I does...

More News From Firefly

Yeah, I'm obsessed with Firefly... this from Fireflyfans.net -- Jewel Staite is blogging as well!

Hello out there from Jewel

I figured since Nathan and Adam and who knows who else have been posting on here and keeping you guys up to date, I might as well, too. I just bought a new lap top and am very anxious to use it! (If I can figure out how to use it). "Serenity" is a dream come true. Working with these wonderful people who love their jobs so much, every day, all day, is just awesome. WE ARE BACK!!!! Some things have changed, but not a lot, and no, Adam, I'm not giving away any spoilers. I can say this, though: Joss is a genius. This script is truly one of the best I've read, and I'm incredibly honored to be doing this film-- his first film-- and my first film as a lead (!). How exciting is that!! There hasn't been a bad day yet. Even with dust in your mouth and suncreen running into your eyes and sweat making little pools under your boobs... this is still the best job I've ever had. Thank you thank you thank you to the fans out there. Your continued support makes this whole experience even more enjoyable. I'll write again soon!

Mussst Have, My Preciousssss

I just discovered, courtesy of my local public library, Cowboy Bebop. It's difficult to explain this anime in brief terms. It's part private eye, part western, definitely sci-fi... hmmm, kinda like another favorite of mine, Firefly. And yet very different. It looks like I can get the whole series for around $30.

So here's today's meme: What's your Cowboy Bebop Theme Song?
my cowboy bebop theme song is adieu

what's your cowboy bebop theme song?

Okay, I'm done -- what are you waiting for? Read about it, watch it! (It's on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the wee small hours of the am)

SciFi Channel News - Wyle Books The Librarian

ER star Noah Wyle has signed on to play the title role in TNT's upcoming fantasy telefilm The Librarian, which will be executive produced by Dean Devlin (Independence Day), TNT announced. Wyle will play the caretaker of a repository of humanity's greatest secrets hidden beneath the New York Public Library, which includes everything from the Golden Fleece to the Ark of the Covenant, the network said.

David Titcher (Around the World in 80 Days) wrote the screenplay and serves as co-producer. The Librarian is set to premiere on TNT in fourth quarter of 2004.

As if we didn't all already know that librarians rock!
